County proclaims Hunger Action Month, encourages donations
The Hays County Commissioners Court has proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month, and Precinct 2 Commissioner Mark Jones, vice president of the Food Bank’s Board of Directors, encouraged all who can to consider a contribution.
Denise Blok, CEO, said that more than 1.6 million children in Texas live with food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal is coming from, or if it is.
“Hunger is not always something you can see, and the need is not apparent like when someone’s house burns down,” Blok said. “Hays County Food Bank represents a county-wide effort to feed and provide nutrition education to the hungry, made possible by the generous contributions of individuals, civic organizations, local government, and businesses, including more than 21,000 volunteer hours donated in 2017,” she said.
“A $25 donation can provide 100 meals through the buying power of the food bank, and $30 provides a family with a turkey and traditional sides for a holiday meal,” Jones said.
“If you make a $30 contribution, you can make all the fun you want of me in the turkey suit I’ll be wearing for ‘Turkeys Tackling Hunger’ in October. There are many ways to donate.”
