Downtown mural celebrating diversity to be unveiled in January

Sunday, January 3, 2021

A new downtown San Marcos mural showcasing unity in the community will be unveiled in January.

The mural — Celebrating Diversity: Our Common Thread — will be located at the corner of LBJ and MLK on the wall of the former Hays County Justice Center.

Artist Robert Jones is currently working on creating the mural, which will feature hidden icons with a challenge to find them. Some of the icons will be virtual and lead to links with information about local cultural leaders. The mural will be visually engaging and interactive.

The Diversity Committee of the Downtown Association, which consists of the Indigenous Cultures Institute, Dunbar Heritage Association and Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, has worked with the artist to create a mural that brings all the cultures of San Marcos together.

The project is a community fully funded effort. Contributions can be made to this unifying tribute to all our cultures at www.downtownsanmarcos.org/mural. All donations in excess of $250 will be recognized on a plaque next to the mural. Smaller contributions will be noted on the Facebook page: Celebrate Diversity – community mural.
