A former San Marcos High School coach accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student turned himself in to Travis County authorities Friday afternoon.

On Feb. 15, Judge Jo Anne Prado issued a warrant for Ian Michael Madden, 27, for an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student, a second-degree felony. According to a press release from the city, a San Marcos police officer was dispatched to San Marcos High School on Jan. 24 at approximately 6:25 p.m. The athletic director and assistant principal notified the officer that two students had told a coach about an inappropriate relationship between Madden, a history/government teacher and boys basketball coach, and a 17-year-old female student.

Once the school district was notified, SMCISD began an investigation and contacted SMPD, the press release says.

“During the investigation and forensic interview, the student admitted to several incidents of sexual intercourse over a period of two months,” the release says. “In a separate interview with Madden, he also admitted to the sexual intercourse. Numerous text messages and photos of the two were located on the victim’s cell phone that was seized in the investigation.”

The affidavit of probable cause for Madden’s arrest states that several San Marcos High School students had told faculty about rumors they had heard regarding Madden being in a romantic relationship with a student. Madden admitted to authorities that he had gone to the movies with the student in question and another student and that he was involved in “a dating relationship” with the student and “that feelings had developed between them.”

The city reported that Madden was suspended from his job on Jan. 25 and that he has retained an attorney. SMCISD authorities said that Madden was in the second year of his contract with the district and that the high school was the only campus in the district where he had worked.

Information gleaned from social media shows that Madden had worked as an intern and as video coordinator for the Texas State University Men’s Basketball program prior to his employment at San Marcos High School.
