Santa visited the School Fuel San Marcos (SFSM) headquarters recently to present SFSM Board Members a $5,500 check from the Hill Country Freethinkers Association (HCFA).

School Fuel San Marcos board members Nancy Smith, Nick Hoover and Jenny Mangrum accepted the award.

The Freethinkers Association was established in the greater San Marcos area over five years ago as an educational, charitable, and social organization. It traces its origin to freethinking German immigrants who came to the Texas Hill Country between 1840 and 1860 seeking freedom from political and religious tyranny. The group meets monthly to discuss topics such as free thought as a philosophical life-stance, humanism, ethics, science, psychology, philosophy, and religion. Its charitable activities include providing scheduled meals at the Southside Community Center shelter, sponsoring educational events with other organizations in the area, and making donations to local charitable organizations.

HCFA members making the presentation included Judy Telford, Jim Berry, Susan Kirby, Harvey Ginsberg, Gil Fulmer, Shirley Ogletree, Sheila Fling, Karen and Karl Brown, and June and Lamar Hankins.

School Fuel San Marcos is a nonprofit organization that began in 2013, providing 31 students bags of food to take home for the weekend. This year, it is providing 671 San Marcos elementary school children from homeless or very low-income families with weekend food. The organization hopes to expand to include all schools in the SMCISD. To volunteer or donate, readers can contact the group at, or call Nancy Smith at 512-557-7740.
