Freethinkers donate to School Fuel program

The Hill Country Freethinkers Association presented School Fuel with $11,000 from a recent BBB hosted by Jim Berry at his New Braunfels ranch. The Freethinkers also raised $5,500 at a previous event to benefit School Fuel. The funds raised will provide weekend food for 77 SMCISD elementary school children in the upcoming school year.

School Fuel is a local non-profit providing a sack of food each weekend of the school year for elementary school children who don’t have adequate food to eat. For only $215 a year, a nutritious sack of food is packed on Thursday and delivered to all six elementary schools on Friday morning courtesy of Ace Relocation System. Some 703 children will receive weekend food support in the 2018-2019 school year. The SMCISD will provide free breakfast and lunch for every student in the upcoming school year but weekend hunger persists.

There are as many as 2,000 middle and high school students who also need weekend food support so School Fuel is working now to provide for those hungry children. The goal is to begin serving middle school students in the 2019-2020 school year.

Hungry students struggle to achieve their potential at school and often continue to have issues into adulthood. School Fuel’s goal is to provide for these children each weekend so that when they come to school on Mondaythey can fully participate in the learning experience. Without a good education it will be difficult to end the cycle of poverty.
