Juneteenth events officially kicked off Thursday night with the Garland Warren, Nelvia L. Burleson and Charles Callihan Memorial Cake Auction held at the San Marcos Activity Center — but there’s plenty of fun and food to go.

The two-day Juneteenth Charity Barbecue Cookoff will get underway this evening in San Marcos Plaza Park 7 p.m. with a pork chop competition for kids aged 10 to 16; followed by fajitas at 7:30 p.m., beans at 8:30 p.m. and margaritas at 9:15 p.m.

On Saturday, the chicken competition will be at noon, followed by baby back or spare ribs at 1 p.m., cook’s choice at 2 p.m., cobbler at 3 p.m. and brisket at 3:30 p.m.

But before that will come the Juneteenth parade.

Participants will form up at Dunbar Center at 10 a.m. and march through downtown to San Marcos Plaza Park. Prizes will be given for the best float or costume, the best performance of an individual or group and the most original performance, costume or float design.

Arts and crafts and food vendors will also be on site.
