A 20-year-old Kyle resident has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a 22-year-old that occurred late Wednesday night.

According to Lt. Todd Riffe of the Hays County Sheriff's Office, the call came in at approximately 11:23 p.m. concerning an aggravated assault in the 500 block of Cody Lane.

Arrriving officers found a woman administering CPR to a Hispanic man who had been shot several times. The man, identified as Sergio Rodriguez-Arevalo, was taken by EMS to a local hospital but later died.

Deputies arrested Francisco Antonio Cardona at the scene. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting occurred over a narcotics transaction,” Riffe said in a news release. Riffe said both the deceased and the suspect had “extensive criminal histories,” though online county records show only one prior arrest for Cardona — who was jailed in January for assaulting a public servant, interfering with public duties and resisting arrest. Rodriguez-Arevalo had arrests going back to 2014.

Riffe told media that no more information was currently available, as the investigation is ongoing.

Cardona is jailed under bonds totaling $200,000.
