KZSM – A diverse community radio station

Sunday, August 26, 2018

If you’ve listened to any of the programming on your true community radio station, it quickly becomes evident that all our radio hosts are different from each other and their interests are varied. From heavy metal to discussions about books to interviews with local politicians to rock and roll, the programs that you hear are created and produced solely by each individual radio host.

Very few of our staff have previous radio broadcast experience. These intrepid individuals have learned from each other and utilize their own creativity to produce some of the best radio programming available with limited resources and donated equipment. Individuals interested in joining our team of broadcasters are encouraged to determine what it is that gets them truly excited and that they care to share with our listeners. The results have been overwhelming!

Uncle Gene and Marisa of Indigenous Freedom Radio on Saturday afternoons have shared with us that radio DJs of similar genres around the state are limited to playing music only. However, the discussions on the environment and other topics concerning indigenous cultures all over the world become lively when these two get started. With Uncle Gene helping Marisa to discover her indigenous roots, one never knows what the topic of the day will be, but then, they must be drawing subjects out of a hat because they rarely plan their discussions ahead of time, we are told.

As an example of how diverse our programming is, our Saturday line-up begins with Soul Sanctuary with Attika K. Bastion, followed by The 6-4-3, a baseball show with Jeremiah and Richard, then Live at the Farmer’s Market, followed by Anything But Soccer with Damian, an encore presentation of We the People, a program on how to get involved in local politics hosted by Rob Roark, Celtic Corner with Limey’s Lass, a program complete with bagpipe music, Indigenous Freedom Radio, Equality Right Now, a program on feminism for everyone, a reprised episode of Undressed with Frankie Blackheart, Style Warz, our hip-hop offering with Chris and Inspirational Moments with JoAnn. News, information and music in one listening day.

Bring your ideas and enthusiasm to our next volunteer staff meeting at Wake the Dead Coffee House on Wednesday Sept. 19. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. What would you like to share?

Get your Mermaid on! Our radio hosts will be this year’s Mermaid Promenade parade announcers!
