KZSM – A station made of volunteers

Sunday, September 30, 2018

We often hear from our listeners that what they hear from our programming is impressive. What makes this truly impressive though, is that every single one of our radio hosts and staff members are volunteers most of which have no previous radio experience. When we invite people to join our radio family, we don’t expect everyone to be able to sit in the booth and talk to our listeners who are spread out all over the world. Everyone comes to the table with their own skill sets, not all with the ability to speak publicly, inform or to be able to entertain. There are many other skills required to operate and maintain our radio broadcasts.

Individuals with management experience, training skills, and recruiting abilities are also needed. As the radio station grows in its scope and function, adding these skills becomes more of a necessity. As interest in what we do continues to grow, we anticipate the need to initiate periodic orientation and training sessions. Prior experience in broadcasting is helpful but not essential. Job descriptions for the positions of volunteer coordinator and program director are currently under development. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact us through our website, visit us at one of our events, or stop by the studio to talk to one of our staff members. Remember, however, that all positions are for volunteers. Internship and community service hours are also be available.

Recently, we held our second heavy metal benefit concert. It was such as success that we are already planning another similar event. Until then, on Oct. 20, join us at Wake the Dead Coffee House for our Rock the Dead Fall Party. Plans are coming together to have an all-day music event, so mark your calendars.

Also, in October, since it is the Halloween month, we will host a costume contest during our Kissing Alley concert. There will be three age categories and all entries must be appropriate and in good taste as all our Kissing Alley concerts are family-friendly.

Stop by our booth at the Farmer’s Market and visit with your friendly community radio family. We are there almost every Saturday. Take home a printed copy of our program schedule.

Bring your ideas and suggestions to or next volunteer staff meeting at Wake the Dead Coffee House on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
