KZSM — Community support and connection

Sunday, November 22, 2020

As the pandemic drags on, community connection, access to support, and information about resources becomes more and more important. KZSM.org offers all of those. Throughout the day, you can hear a Public Service Announcement compiled by Carole Coburn, host of “Friday Night with Care” (Fridays 8-10 p.m.), offering an exhaustive list of community resources for health and welfare.

Mondays 3-4 p.m. “The Veterans Hour” provides resources for veterans and their families. Host Steve Jones points out that “there's a mountain of info that can be overwhelming.” His co host Dee Bartlett “researches various groups to find out what they do, how they help, and what kind of reputation they have. We help veterans and their families navigate those waters.”

Tuesday 4-5 p.m., “Bookmarked” connects with readers in San Marcos and beyond with conversations about all kinds of books. Guests include authors, experts, and enthusiastic readers. Local author Jon Marc Smith will be a guest on Tuesday’s broadcast to talk about “Make Them Cry,” the action-packed thriller he co-wrote with Smith Henderson.

On Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m., “The Big Sad” offers a light-hearted take on the serious subject of depression. Co-host Raymond Cabrera explains that “while it is a comedy show, we are hoping to help people out,” and the hosts always include information about resources available for those seeking help.

Understanding a community’s institutions helps people stay connected. Fridays from 7-8 p.m., “We the People,” explores issues affecting San Marcos and Hays County through interviews with government officials and local activists, and analysis by hosts Rob Roark and Quad D.

Our community and many of its people have deep roots in Indigenous nations. “Indigenous Freedom Radio” airs Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. Hosts Gene Randall and Marisa Diaz provide powwow updates, information relevant to native people, and “news from around Indian Country.”

One of our newest shows, “Real Estate 101” (Sundays 8-9 p.m.) offers practical advice for prospective home buyers. Host Salana Henderson wants “to show people that if you can afford to rent in this city, you can afford to buy.” She and her guests will share advice on everything from negotiating a mortgage to designing your space and even adopting a pet.

KZSM.org provides support and connection throughout the week. Visit our web site to listen, and stay to learn how you can help sustain this service by volunteering or donating to support our 501(c) (3) nonprofit.
