KZSM — Live interviews with special guests

Sunday, October 11, 2020

We at KZSM.org, your true community radio station, fulfill our mission to educate, engage, enlighten, and entertain our listeners with a range of programming that expresses the diversity and creativity of our San Marcos community. Even through the pandemic, our program hosts obtain noteworthy guests for live interviews. This week:

On “Bookmarked,” Tuesday 4-5 p.m., I will talk with Susan Wittig Albert, best-selling author of the China Bayles mystery series. These adventures take place in Pecan Springs, a fictitious Texas Hill country town the feels a lot like San Marcos. As Albert explains, “China wants the things that many contemporary women seek: a quieter life, rewarding work, a close relationship, friends, and community.” China owns an herb shop, and each of the twenty-seven mysteries features a different plant and includes information and recipes. Recently, Albert has expanded her scope with two linked mystery novella trilogies featuring other Pecan Springs characters.

On Tuesday’s broadcast, Albert will preview “Hemlock,” her forthcoming China Bayles mystery, and talk about her next Pecan Springs trilogy. We will also discuss the effects of the pandemic on reading, writing, and publishing. Do readers make different choices in times of stress and confinement, for instance? As the author of non-fiction, novels, and two other mystery series, Albert will draw on her extensive experience of the publishing industry to describe their response to the pandemic.

On “Philosophy and Popular Music,” Thursday 3-5 p.m., host Paul Wilson will interview Bill Cunningham and Gary Talley, founding and current members of the Box Tops. The band flourished in the 1960s, when they had the hits "The Letter," “Cry Like A Baby," and "Soul Deep." They will talk about the career of the band, which revived in mid-2015 when the two musicians reformed the band in response to continued requests by fans. They will also discuss the Box Tops’ role in creating the Memphis sound, the Southern variety of soul that flourished in that city, and they will reflect on the legacy of their friend and bandmate the late Alex Chilton. After leaving the Box Tops, Chilton had an independent solo career as an influential alternate musician.

This week’s interviews, like all our broadcasts, are planned and produced by volunteers. KZSM.org is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, sustained entirely by donations. Please go to KZSM.org and use the “donate” button to help keep this and all our programming on the air.
