KZSM — Many ways to get involved

Sunday, April 11, 2021

Many times every day, we at KZSM.org identify ourselves as “true community radio for San Marcos and the world.” Creating and broadcasting programming designed to educate, engage, enlighten, and entertain our audience defines our mission, but our relationship with you, our listeners, is an interaction, an exchange, not a one-way street.

Many of our program hosts invite guests from the community and beyond to share their insights, art, and opinions. On “We the People” (Fridays 7-8 p.m.), our talk show covering local issues and ways to get involved, hosts Rob Roark and Quad D talk regularly with San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson and Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra. They also interview activists, experts, and your neighbors.

On Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m., the talk show “Bookmarked” often includes readings and conversations with local writers and readers. Jennifer Kabay, admin of the San Marcos Public Library’s Virtual Bok Club, frequently joins the discussions. On April 20, “Bookmarked” will celebrate National Poetry Month with local poets Faylita Hicks, author of “Hoodwitch,” and E. D. Watson, poet in residence at St Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Many of our broadcasts, especially “Revolving Door” (Sundays 6-8 p.m.) and “Friday Night with Care” (Fridays 8-10 p.m.) feature live performances by local musicians. Nate Guthrie, Tish Hinojosa, David Lopez, Ace Pepper, and Tracy Weinberg have all visited our studios to share their music. Our Program Hosts record their songs, and their music becomes part of our archive, played to enhance extra minutes between shows.

If you would like to share your work or your insights on one of our broadcasts, you can e-mail us at KZSMSanMarcos@gmail.com. In addition, many of our Program Hosts maintain Facebook pages for their shows; you can visit those pages to learn more about the show and/or to leave a message for the host.

Your true community radio station has room for even more interaction. If you have an idea for a show of your own, let us know. We’re currently seeking classical, country, and world music. We would like to add broadcasts about food, mental and physical health, fitness, and self-care. We love to would include programs for children, and programs for parents. We are especially interested in Spanish language programs. If you have interest or expertise that you would like to share but aren’t sure how, we can help you develop a program to do just that.
