KZSM — A San Marcos voice heard worldwide

Sunday, September 19, 2021

San Marcos native Priscilla Delgado now presents the “Spotlight on Elvis” feature on “The Mop Tops and the King,” independent, weekly, one hour radio show featuring the music of The Beatles and Elvis Presley that plays on 85 community radio stations worldwide, including dozens throughout the U.S. and the UK, and other as far away as Australia, Belgium, the Philippines, and South Africa. Here in San Marcos, the show runs 9-10 p.m. Mondays. Priscilla is featured on this Monday’s show and every other Monday after that.

“Spotlight on Elvis” is one of several features host Steve Chelmsford uses to enliven his show. He describes it as “a free-form segment--approximately one minute on anything related to Elvis.” Priscilla plans to “share a variety of information on Elvis--key moments from his life, little-known stories that have been shared by those who knew him, highlights from his recordings, movies and performances, and brief book talks about Elvis’s life and legacy.”

The brief book talks come naturally: Priscilla reads extensively, served as librarian at Bowie elementary for ten years, and is now completing a PhD in literacy from St. John’s University. She met Chelmsford by phone when both were guests on our KZSM.org show “Bookmarked” (Tuesdays 4-5 p.m.), along with writer, librarian, and Beatles fan Jennifer Kabay, discussing favorite books about Elvis and the Beatles. “The experience of talking about Elvis and the Beatles on ‘Bookmarked’ was serendipitous,” she recalls. Chelmsford agrees, “we here at ‘The Mop Tops and The King’ are honored and thrilled to have Priscilla share her vast knowledge on all things Elvis through “Spotlight on Elvis!”

Priscilla first discovered Elvis when she was only four. She would play her parents’ Elvis records and watch his movies over and over. That first love has grown and lasted her entire life. She has been to Graceland a dozen times, has attended Elvis Week festivities through the years, and has met several people from Elvis’s world, from friends to girlfriends to musicians.

She feels “incredibly honored and excited to be a part of the Mop Tops and the King family. I’m thrilled at the opportunity to share my love and knowledge of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with the world.” Priscilla is “grateful to have been introduced to this program through KZSM.org. We at KZSM.org are grateful to introduce a San Marcos voice to the world.
