League of Women Voters to host city council candidate debate
League of Women Voters of Hays County will hold a debate for the local San Marcos City candidates. This debate will be Thursday, Oct. 17, at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins Street, at 6:30 p.m.
Candidates invited to this debate feature candidates for San Marcos City Council Places 1 and 2. Candidates for Place 1 are Maxfield Baker and Mark Gleason. Candidates for Place 2 are Saul Gonzales, Devin Barrett and “LMC" Lisa Marie Coppoletta.
The League encourages all concerned citizens to attend the debate to be informed of issues important to the San Marcos community. Debate moderator is longtime League leader Kaylene Ray.
Candidates have responded to questions prepared by the League of Women Voters. Their responses have been published on www.Vote411.org. Print versions of candidate questions and answers will be published in the Voters Guide, which will be available to the public at the debate and at the public library.
Citizens are encouraged to try the nonpartisan voters’ guide online, at www.vote411.org. Upon entering a home address, a citizen can view and compare the candidates and their responses for that particular race.
The League of Women Voters of Hays County is a nonpartisan organization open to both women and men dedicated to voter awareness and education.
The League believes in the representative form of government and individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States. A guiding principle of the League is that “government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens and requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible.”
The last day to register to vote for this election was Monday, Oct. 7. Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 21 through Friday, Nov. 1. Election date is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
This year, Hays County will be utilizing vote centers on election day. Vote centers allow registered voters to cast their ballots at any polling place on election day.
