Mark Rockeymoore in race for Council Place 4

Sunday, July 29, 2018

Mark Rockeymoore has announced his candidacy for City Council Place 4 in the upcoming election.

Rockeymoore describes himself as an active volunteer in San Marcos who has served as an ethics review commissioner and as president of the board of trustees of the San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Rockeymoore is a Desert Storm veteran, serving in Germany and the BENELUX region during the first modern conflict in Southwest Asia in the early 90s. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Prairie View A&M University and a Master of Arts in Environmental Geography from Indiana University in Bloomington, he went on to become an ABD PhD candidate in Geography Education in the Department of Geography at Texas State University. He served on the Associated Student Government at Texas State as parliamentarian and the Graduate Student Council as secretary. “I have worked in the past as a Geographic Information System analyst and manager, as well as taught at the university level for 14 years,” he said. He was employed by The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment as an environmental interpreter for two and a half years, educating the public about the nature of Spring Lake, the Edwards Aquifer and the regional biomes that make up this unique and endangered environment we call home.

Currently and for the past three years, he has served as an instructional assistant for the FOCUS Program at San Marcos High School, working with challenged populations that need guidance and aid in navigating academic and social environments.

“Everything I have done in the 11 years that I’ve lived in San Marcos has allowed me to accumulate the knowledge base necessary to lead San Marcos into the future,” Rockeymoore said. “The people that I have met and gotten to know — in the university environment, SMCISD and the town proper — have allowed me to share in their lives and experiences and given me their trust, a gift for which I will be eternally grateful.

“Possessing an in-depth geographic understanding of the urban and environmental situation of San Marcos, Hays County, and the region, as well as the major conurbations to the north and south, has allowed me to understand the absolute and uncompromising importance of our river and natural environment,” he continued. “The Hill Country and the Blackland Prairies are a natural bounty that are currently hosting extraordinary and record-breaking growth. I will continue my efforts to learn and grow as a person and share my knowledge and experience as part of the San Marcos leadership team.”
