Middle school coach jailed for improper relationship

The former boys athletic coordinator at Goodnight Middle School was arrested last week for having an improper relationship with a student. Rodney Guerrero turned himself in on Saturday and was released later that day on a $15,000 surety bond.

Guerrero, 39, of Kyle, is accused of having a relationship with a female student at San Marcos High School who made outcry to a San Marcos Police Officer on June 10, accompanied by her mother.

The student told the officer that she had known Guerrero since she was in sixth grade at Goodnight. When she became a freshman at SMHS in August 2016, she said she was talking with Guerrero “when he saw pictures of her in a two piece bathing suit on her phone.”

She said he asked her about showing him more photos, and the relationship progressed to the point where she sent him a semi-nude selfie, which the officer took to be the “start of the improper relationship” that continued until June 1 of this year. 

The student said the two met “during school games where she helped out in the concession stand” and also on teacher workdays, and the relationship progressed to the point of oral sex “on three different occasions.”

The student also underwent a forensic examination at Roxanne’s House during which she gave basically the same information. She also talked about “breaking up” with the coach, a conversation that she recorded. “The victim told Guerrero she did not think they should do this anymore,” the affidavit of probable cause for Guerrero’s arrest says. “Guerrero tells the victim it was her choice. During the recording, the victim asks Guerrero if he was going to be weird now and he tells her ‘no.’”

According to his profile on the San Marcos CISD website, Guerrero lived most of his life in Central Texas, attended The University of Texas and St. Edward’s University and holds a master’s degree in sports management. The profile also says he taught health, physical education and athletics with “degrees and certifications” in kinesiology and sports management.

“Earlier this summer, law enforcement officials contacted the district regarding allegations of possible misconduct by a Goodnight employee. The district immediately placed the employee on administrative leave and cooperated with law enforcement,” said Andrew Fernandez, the district’s director of communications.  

“While the district was cooperating with law enforcement officials during the investigation, notification to the community on the allegations was based on when the police would allow the district to share any information. A letter to the campus community will be sent home informing them of the situation that has taken place.

“In San Marcos CISD, the safety of our students is paramount as we strive to maintain a safe learning environment for all students.”
