New resource for military, vets launched

Local veterans and active duty military, as well as their families, have a new resource to draw on.

Catholic Charities of Central Texas launched the St. Michael’s Veterans Services program in September. It hopes to serve 490 individuals this year form Hays, Caldwell and 23 additional counties in Central Texas, the organization said in a news release.

Services, available in English and Spanish, address short-term financial assistance, mentoring, counseling (virtual and in-person), employment/ education support, transportation vouchers, housing stabilization, peer support groups and referrals.

The services are available at no charge to all regardless of their faith.

The program is supported by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Texas is home nearly 1.6 million veterans. Of those, one-fifth reported a service-connected disability rating, 4.1 percent reported unemployment, and 2,718 veterans indicated they were homeless. Hays and Caldwell counties are home to 16,209 veterans, some of whom may be in need of support according to the Texas Workforce Investment Council.
