Organizations launch city-wide student essay contest

Sunday, October 14, 2018

The San Marcos Cinema Club, grassroots immigrant rights organization Mano Amiga and local schools are joining forces to hold a citywide essay contest, open to students from grade 3 through high school seniors. Diana Garcia, longtime Cinema Club member and local educator, is spearheading the competition, which is focusing in the importance of family.

Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos board member Sonja Villalobos sets up the altar before the press conference. Centro is one of the entities sponsoring the essay contest that focuses on the importance of family.

Students are asked to write two pages or less explaining how family, or one specific family member, influences them in a positive way. Students can write about family members who have passed on. Instead of an essay, students have the option of creating a slideshow of no more than nine slides showing how their families, or a family member, influence them positively. Submissions may be in Spanish or English, or bilingual, and are due by 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26. Essays can be submitted to D. Garcia at De-Zavala Elementary, Room B2, and slideshows can be emailed to diana.garcia@smcisd.net.
