Police: Burglars cut power before entering businesses

SMPD REPORTS

San Marcos Police reports indicate a mini crime spree occurred early Tuesday. Three businesses in close proximity to each other reported break-ins that were preceded by the suspects shutting off electrical power.

According to city spokesman Trey Hatt, San Marcos Police said the power was turned off at Take5 Oil Change on Hwy. 80 at approximately 4:33 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, after which two suspects used a pry bar to enter the building through a back door.

The suspects, wearing hoodies that covered parts of their faces, also used the pry bar to dislodge a safe that they took with them, along with its contents including cash.

Another business located at 1404 Clarewood, the Liquor Stop, told police their power was cut off at 4:20 a.m. Suspects in that case also used a pry bar on the back door but did not gain entry. “Due to recent burglary, the owner added extra locks to the door which prevented the actors from entering,” Hatt said, referring to the suspects as “actors.”

The third case occurred at El Golfo Restaurant on the East Access Road near Hwy. 80. In that case, however, entry was gained after suspects broke a window. Two cash boxes and a small safe were stolen.

Also on Tuesday, a man reported that he was robbed while sitting in his car at the Rio Vista Park Substation about 9:17 p.m.

He reportedly told police he was listening to the radio when two Hispanic men approached, one armed with a handgun who demanded his cell phone and wallet. A second suspect allegedly punched the victim. Both suspects fled in a silver Ford truck.

The Daily Record was not permitted to speak directly to police regarding any of the incidents.
