Poll respondents favor ‘no kill’

Sunday, August 19, 2018

The Record’s online poll from Aug. 10-17 asked readers whether they think the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter should move toward “no kill.”

In recent months, there has been a growing public outcry for the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter – which is an open-intake shelter that serves the whole county – to become “no kill” shelter.

Of the 4,534 cats and dogs that entered the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter in 2017, 2,049 animals were killed – 1,353 cats and 696 dogs. Animal advocates say there are policies the shelter could enact that are more cost effective, proactive and humane – like expanded spay/neuter programs, education initiatives and an expanded foster program. Others say that moving towards “no kill” would be too expensive and should not be a city priority.

The poll asking, “Do you think the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter should move towards ‘no kill’?” received a total of 417 votes, with the majority of votes – 81 percent or 338 votes – going to option “Yes, enacting ‘no kill’ policies would be more humane and proactive.” Nineteen percent, or 80 votes, chose, “No, it should not be one of the city’s priorities.”

A majority of poll voters think that the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter should move towards “no kill,” by enacting more proactive and humane policies.

Every week, the Record gives its readers the opportunity to voice their opinions on different topics. This poll does not, and does not purport to, accurately depict public opinion. It is only intended to inspire thought-provoking discussion within the community.

SMDR’s new poll is available online now, and asks for readers’ opinions on whether they think the Texas Education Agency’s A-F accountability system is beneficial.
