Public hearing on tax rate, budget to take place at school board meeting

Saturday, June 18, 2022

Public hearings on the proposed tax rate for 2022-23 and the budget for the upcoming academic year will take place during Monday’s San Marcos Consolidated ISD Board of Trustees meeting.

The discussion regarding the proposed tax rate will take place first followed by a discussion on the proposed budget for 2022-23. Following the public hearings, the board will consider taking action regarding the budget.

The proposed budget would see total revenues at $82,022,067 for 2022-23, while expenditures would total $95,951,872, placing SMCISD in a deficit of nearly $14 million. Action regarding the 2022-23 tax rate is set to take place at a future meeting.

In other business, the trustees will elect school board officers — president, vice-president and secretary.

The board will consider and take action for its 2022-23 board calendar. Most meetings will be held during the third Monday of each month, with the exception of earlier meetings on Nov. 14, Dec. 12 and March 6 for school holidays and Tuesday meetings on Jan. 17 and Feb. 21 for observance of federal holidays.

The trustees will consider approval of a contract with Excel Energy group for installation of LED lighting throughout SMCISD campuses. The contract with Excel Energy Group would cost $723,000. The board will consider approval of a contract with Enviromatic Systems for installation of HVAC controls for De Zavala Elementary. The contract, if awarded, would be in the amount of $131,943.

The board will discuss approval of a contract with Longhorn Bus Sales in the amount of $753,372 for six school buses for the district.

The board will also consider approval of a Texas Association of School Boards delegate and an alternate TASB delegate. Consideration and discussion will take place regarding the approval of awarded contracts for professional development, speakers, consultants, trainers and related services and materials.

The trustees will consider taking possible action rewarding an optional flexible school day program at San Marcos High School for the 2022-23 school year. The board will also discuss and take possible action to provide a stipend for staff who have obtained master’s or PH.D degrees.                                                                                                                                          In closed session, the board will hold discussions regarding legal counsel regarding Stantac Contract, superintendent’s evaluation and contract, chief financial officer, chief of human resources and executive director of schools. The trustees will reconvene to take possible action on items discussed in executive session.

Monday’s meeting takes place at San Marcos High School — 2601 Rattler Road — inside the criminal justice classroom, beginning at 6 p.m. Meetings can also be watched online at https://www.smcisd.net/Page/320.
