Just when you didn’t think it could get any worse.

If you thought fighting off a global pandemic wasn’t tough enough, well let’s have Mother Nature throw in a once in a lifetime weather event that included several inches of snow and ice. The effects are already dubbed as, “Snowmageddon.” If it were a movie it’s supporting cast would be actors, Minimum Power and Miss No Water.

Seriously, during a crisis such as this there always seems to be those who step up to the challenge. I’m so proud of the San Marcos Firefighters/EMS and police. On the days I was able to make it to work, watching them head down ice covered highways and city streets — it was a sight to behold. I’d stack them up against any departments in the state.

Kudos to the City of San Marcos who handed out water, and teamed up with San Marcos Consolidated ISD to help create warming buses to those who needed them both. A tip of the hat to Texas State University too for doing the same.

Closer to home I can’t boast enough how proud I am of the Daily Record staff and all of those who are part of San Marcos Publishing. Managing Editor Nick Castillo spent two nights at the Record to bring you the latest updates on our electronic platforms: sanmarcosrecord.com; Twitter (@sanmarcosrecord) and Facebook as events unfolded.

Pressroom supervisor Rigo Vargas and pressman Juan Carrizales came in everyday to print other newspapers in our network to make sure those communities received the news as soon as possible.

Karen George, circulation manager, made sure her crew consisting of Tony Martinez, Ben Harrison, Taylor Tribby, Charles Guerrero, Bea Wiginton, Tom Heidebrecht and Gilbert Torres arrived safely and that the newspapers in our network went out on time.

Drew King, sports editor, doubled as a general assignments reporter while Ger ald Castillo was out recording the event one picture at a time. Features editor Celeste Hollister continued to produce a great Our Town section and Stephanie Gates did the best she could too under trying circumstances.

Toy Mendez, Colton Ashabranner and Al Sanchez each made sure design elements were taken care of remotely — in between power outages and internet interruptions.

Marcy Holt, advertising director, continued working from home making sure certain special editions were ready to go upon her return to work.

Office Manager Ronda Young, often my confidant, checked in everyday to see what she could do to help and Pam Gravis, classified manager, made it in several days to make sure classifieds were posted.

To say I have a wonderful crew is an understatement. They're awesome.

But the real star of the show is you San Marcos. You’ve handled this weather crisis with grace and dignity. Though we managed to post the Daily Record digitally each day, we appreciate your understanding of the suspension of the printed version during this crisis. It was simply just too hazardous for our drivers to make it up and down the slippery roads. We certainly won’t forget it and will add a full week of delivery to the end of your subscription.

Thank you for your understanding.
