San Marcos getting ready for Juneteenth

Once again this year, San Marcos Juneteenth celebrations will get a sweet start. The Garland Warren, Nelvia L. Burleson and Charles Callihan Memorial Cake Auction will be Thursday, June 14, at 6 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 East Hopkins Street.

The popular auction is a 38-year tradition, and has funded scholarships for local students to attend schools including Texas State University, MIT, Xavier University, Howard University, The University of Texas, Baylor University, The University of Houston, Clark Atlanta University, Abilene Christian University, Notre Dame University and Rutgers University.

More events follow on Saturday, June 16, beginning with a 9 a.m. ceremony in which ImpactSM Charity Inc. will remember the life and sacrifice of San Marcos Police Officer Ken Copeland, who was fatally shot last December while serving a warrant on what was supposed to have been his day off.

Mary Earls, secretary for the Juneteenth Foundation Inc., will present a portrait of Officer Copeland which will be carried to City Park and placed on the entertainment stage for the duration of Juneteenth celebrations.

Also during the ceremony, San Marcos first responders including police, fire and EMS will be honored for their continued service to the community and participation in Juneteenth celebrations.

Saturday’s other big event is the parade. Entrants will begin to form up at 8 a.m. at the Dunbar Recreation Center, 801 MLK Drive.

The parade will get underway at 10 a.m. and wind from Dunbar down MLK to the intersection of LBJ Drive, then left on LBJ through downtown to Hutchison Street and then to City Park.
