SMUUF donates-the-plate to Wimberley Pride

Thursday, February 27, 2020

The San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) takes up a special offering each month called “Donate-the-Plate” to give to an area non-profit organization whose work aligns with their religious values.  The congregation gave generously to Wimberley Pride on Sunday, February 16 — $800.  Jeannie Lewis, SMUUF Social Justice Chair, said, “Wimberley Pride is a new organization that held its first Pride March on September 21, 2019.”  Lewis continued, “We have several SMUUF church members who live in Wimberley and participated in that first Pride March there.  We are happy to donate to the funding for their second Pride March on September 19, 2020.”

Marissa Fehler, one of the Wimberley Pride organizers, spoke on behalf of Wimberley Pride on Sunday, February 16, and several members of the congregation who reside in Wimberley stood with her as she addressed the congregation.

Fehler said, “The idea of a Pride March in Wimberley bean May 3, 2018, with a simple post in a Facebook group. That post generated much excitement — on all sides of the issue. A founding committee began work in 2018, and we were delighted with the mostly positive reception to the plans for the first Wimberley Pride March. We have also been given the opportunity to hear some comments from those who have been less positive about the plans.  But those people have so far been in the minority.”

Fehler continued, “However, we believe all in Wimberley can learn from this endeavor, so we listen with respect, as we expect others to do so to the LGBTQ community in Wimberley.  Pride movements help bring the community together and to find bonds that unite us. Community binds across all. Family is also an important aspect of the LGBTQ world — our families are as valid as any others. LGBTQ Pride is ‘family friendly’ by definition.”

SMUUF D-T-P funds will be used to support the 2020 Wimberley Pride Weekend — September 18 - 20.  Fehler expressed gratitude to her SMUUF family for their generous donation.
