Suspect in fatal hit and run named

A San Marcos man with a record of arrests going back to 2008 has been identified as the driver of a vehicle that jumped a curb and struck a Kyle resident who was walking on the sidewalk near the city’s Nature Center last Friday evening.

Uriah Keith Robinson, 29, of 850 Boulder Bluff, is charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony; failure to stop and render aid, a third degree felony; escape, a second degree felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class A Misdemeanor, resisting arrest/search/transport, a Class A Misdemeanor, as well as misdemeanor drug charges.

Tyrus Dennis Piano, 48, of Kyle, was walking on the sidewalk near the intersection of Riverside Drive and the West Access Road of Interstate 35 at apprxoimately 7:15 p.m. when a 1988 Toyota van driven by Robinson jumped the curb and fatally struck him.

A passenger in Robinson’s van jumped out and attempted to flee but was caught by Texas State University police who happened to be in the area. The van didn’t stop, but took the turnaround under the interstate at the San Marcos River. It then jumped another curb and struck a tree.

Robinson was helped from the vehicle by witnesses who held him until police arrived. He was taken for a blood draw at Central Texas Medical Center before being booked into Hays County Jail, where he remains in lieu of bonds totalling $1,016,000.

It was Robinson’s eighth arrest in Hays County since October 2008. His prior arrests have been for drug offenses as well as family violence, tampering with evidence and burglary. He had been in state custody at least once.
