The fate of the old San Marcos CISD central office could be decided Monday night.

The SMCISD board of trustees is slated to discuss, and possibly take action on, issues related to the old central office building, located at 501 S. LBJ Dr. The district’s administration had to vacate the building last year due to mold and air quality issues.

Karen Griffith, assistant superintendent for business and support services, sought out information about several options for the property. It would cost an estimated $50,000 to $60,000 to demolish the building and the playground, according to Griffith. The portable buildings located on the same piece of property could be auctioned off, Griffith suggested. The costs of maintaining the building are about $10,888 annually, not including insurance. The latest appraisal, according to Griffit, was conducted in 2015; the entire block, including the old Bonham school building that houses Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, was appraised at $3.02 million; Centro itself is valued at $640,000. Griffith said the estimated value of the block minus Centro is $2.38 million, but an updated appraisal would be needed for a more exact value.

In other business, the board is expected to hold a discussion and possibly take action to establish a committee to receive nominations and make recommendations for the renaming of district property, consider approving the purchase of attendance credits from the state and consider approval of the schematic design for the Miller Middle School renovations. Trustees will also consider approval of the hiring of a social emotional learning/guidance director and hear a construction update including information about security fencing at San Marcos High School. The SMCISD board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the Criminal Justice Classroom (11) at San Marcos High School.
