Viva! Cinco de Mayo events will go on this weekend along SM River

LULAC 654

The rain has gone, and the celebration is back on.

Viva! Cinco de Mayo activities including the State Menudo Cookoff, postponed last month, will take place Saturday.

Events begin at 10 a.m. at San Marcos Plaza Park. In addition to the cookoff, there will be entertainment by renowned Tejano artists Stevie D. and Conjunto Cats along with the local bank Wyzer. Live entertainment begins at noon and will run through 6 p.m.

Winners of the menudo cookoff will also be announced at 6.

At 11:45 a.m. and prior to the live entertainment beginning, LULAC Council 654 will honor founding charter member Pete Islas, who died April 26, 2017. Dedicated to the LULAC council and active in community endeavors, Islas was the first Hispanic Chief Appraiser for Hays and Caldwell counties. He was a devout Catholic and active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. For many years he served on church committees involving fundraising, building and religious and educational classes.

This year’s festivities are funded by Sign Arts and the San Marcos Arts Commission. LULAC Council 654 is the sponsor.
