Editor’s note: March 29 was chosen as National Vietnam War Veterans Day because on March 29, 1973, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disbanded, and the last U.S. combat troops departed the Republic of Vietnam. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by 45th U.S. President Donald J. Trump, designating March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Below is a look at one local veteran and his experience in Vietnam.

Travis Elementary EarlyAct raises $850

Every year, Travis Elementary EarlyAct raises funds for a scholarship for a San Marcos High School graduate who attended K-5 at Travis. This year they raised $850 and Rotary will add funds to bring it up to $1,500. Rotary also plans to award a second scholarship for a Travis alum. The $850 was presented to the Rotary Club on March 23 at the Rotary meeting.

Buda names local legend as part of city’s birthday celebration

The Buda City Council named Jim Hollis, former mayor and recently retired President of the Emergency Service District Board #2, as the city’s first “Local Legend” for his long history of service to the Buda community. The award will be presented at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2 during the inaugural founder’s day celebration, Buda’s Birthday, at Buda Amphitheater and City Park.

Wildfire risk remains high for much of Texas in the days ahead, fire officials say

Much of Texas is at an elevated risk of wildfires this weekend and early next week because of higher-than-usual temperatures and a worsening drought, according to Texas A&M Forest Service analysts and the state climatologist.
