Texas State selected sixth in Sun Belt; Pearson named to third team

Texas State was selected sixth in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the conference announced Tuesday. 

The Bobcats earned 71 points to put them in sixth place out of 12 conference opponents. UT-Arlington was picked No. 1 with nine-first place votes. Georgia State was selected No. 2 followed by No. 3 Troy, No. 4 Georgia Southern and No. 5 Louisiana. 

Arkansas State was picked at No. 7, Coastal Carolina at No. 8, South Alabama is at No. 9. Little Rock was placed at No. 10 followed by Appalachian State at No. 11. Louisiana-Monroe rounded out the poll at No. 12

Texas State sophomore guard Nijal Pearson was named to the All-Sun Belt third team. Joining Pearson on the third team are Coastal Carolina senior forward Demario Beck, Georgia Southern senior guard Mike Hughes, senior guard Frank Bartley and ULM junior forward Travis Munnings. 

UTA senior forward Kevin Hervey was picked as the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year. Hervey was also placed on the All-Sun Belt First Team. Joining Hervey on the first team, Georgia Southern junior guard Tookie Brown, Georgia Southern junior guard Ike Smith, UTA senior guard Erick Neal and Troy junior forward Jordon Varnado. 

Appalachian State junior guard Ronshad Shabazz was named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team alongside Coastal Carolina senior Jaylen Shaw, Georgia State sophomore guard D’Marcus Simonds, Louisiana senior forward Bryce Washington and Troy senior guard Wesley Person. 

Texas State’s season begins on Nov. 12 against Air Force. The Bobcats play two exhibition contests before the season begins. Texas State takes on St. Edward’s on Thursday and Rogers State on Saturday both tip-off at 7 p.m. inside Strahan Coliseum.
