Texas State receives Sun Belt honors, picked fifth

Texas State was selected fifth in the Sun Belt coaches’ preseason poll, while senior guard Taeler Deer and junior guard Toshua Leavitt were placed on the All-Sun Belt second team, and senior forward Ericka May earned All-Sun Belt third team honors, the conference announced Thursday.

UTA was selected No. 1 in the coaches poll with seven first-place votes followed by Little Rock, Troy and Louisiana. Arkansas State was picked No. 6, South Alabama No. 7, Georgia State No. 8, and Appalachian State No. 9. Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana-Monroe rounded out the poll at No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12, respectively. 

Deer makes the second team after recorded 332 points last season averaging 10.7 points per game. She also had 109 assists last season for 3.5 per game, and added 46 steals. Deer was the only Bobcat to record at least 300 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists. 

Leavitt earned second-team recognition after averaging 10.1 points per game. She led the Sun Belt and was No. 65 in the country in made 3-pointers at 77. Her 3-point shooting effort last season was the second best in program history

May was placed on the conference’s third team after leading Texas State with 569 rebounds. She’s played in all 94 career games and has started 58 times. 

This was the first time the Bobcats had three players named to preseason teams since joining the Sun Belt. 

"It is nice to have your players recognized and rewarded for their efforts," head coach Zenarae Antoine said in a statement. "Taeler, Toshua and Ericka statistically 'drove' our team in a variety of categories last year and I look forward to their continued efforts and maturity to aid our team towards our goals."

Meanwhile, UT-Arlington senior center Rebekah VanDijk was named preseason Player of the Year. VanDijk also earned All-Sun Belt first team honors alongside Appalachian State senior guard Madi Story, Louisiana senior forward Simone Fields, South Alabama senior center Chyna Ellis and UTA senior guard Cierra Johnson. 

Joining Deer and Leavitt on the second team are Georgia State sophomore guard Jade Lewis, ULM senior forward Gabriella Cortez and Troy senior guard Amanda Mendoza.

May made the third team with Georgia State sophomore guard Madison Newby, Louisiana sophomore guard Jasmine Thomas, South Alabama senior guard Genesis Perrymond and UTA senior guard Crystal Allen.
