Bobcats struggle in road loss to Houston Baptist

Sophomore guard Nijal Pearson continued to produce for Texas State on both ends of the floor Saturday evening when the Bobcats visited Houston Baptist.

Pearson’s team-high 16 points wasn’t enough to mount a comeback against the Huskies who took control of the game early, though. Texas State fell to 4-4 on the season after the 71-52 loss inside Sharp Gym in Houston.

“This loss eclipsed the pain that I felt after UTSA because at least we competed against UTSA,” head coach Danny Kaspar said following Saturday’s game. “This one looked like we were hit in the face and backed off. I hope we can learn from this and bounce back.”

Pearson hit the only 3-pointer the Bobcats made early into the first half to give his team a lead. But Houston Baptist responded with a 7-0 run in a five-minute span. Sophomore Eric Terry stopped the run by getting to free throw line before Pearson added another bucket.

The 17-13 score with 10 minutes remaining in the first half was the closest Texas State would get to the lead for the rest of night. The Huskies closed the half with four made attempts from the free throw line, giving them an eight-point advantage, 38-30.

In the second half, the Bobcats cut the lead down to 10 twice before the Huskies went on their final run. Pearson finished 6-for-19 from the field, while guard Marlin Davis hit four of seven with one steal and one assist. Senior Tyler Blount and Terry ended the night with six points a piece.

Texas state was held to a 30.5 shooting percentage and shot 14-for-19 from the free throw line. The Bobcats were outrebounded for the first time this season, 39-28, but were efficient in creating turnovers throughout the game, 18-11.

The Bobcats move onto McMurray on Wednesday inside Strahan Coliseum with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m. Texas State has five non-conference games remaining in the regular season before traveling to Appalachian State on Dec. 29 to open Sun Belt play.
