SMPD shooting range quiet again after regional academy

Neighborhood Noise

The big bang has come and gone.

Sounds of gunfire from the shooting range at San Marcos Police headquarters on Interstate 35 South has prompted a rash of complaints on social media recently, some from the historic district.

Though the range is mainly used by local officers, an annual regional academy also trains there, Police Chief Chase Stapp said.

But that’s over now. “They are done with the shooting portion of the academy now, so the range is quiet once again,” he said.

Stapp said he’s not sure why the noise got so much attention this year. “It’s not a new situation,” he said.
