2017 SMDR Female Athlete of the Year: Kassi Hormuth

2017 End of Year Awards

Senior Kassi Hormuth headlined a Texas State group that put the Sun Belt on notice this year. The forward was one of six players to be named to an all-conference team after a second place, 8-2 SBC record. 

She was the driving force in the Bobcat attack that featured three First-Team players. Texas State concluded the year with the highest goals per game (1.94), assists (32), and assists per game (1.84) in the Sun Belt. 

Along with First-Team honors, Hormuth received the Sun Belt's  Offensive Player of the Year award. She led the league with five assists and five goals amid a seven-match winning streak in October. Hormuth concluded her final year as a Bobcat tied for third in assists (15), ninth in points (47) and tied for tenth in goals (16) in program history. 

For the first time in school history, she was named United Soccer Coaches All-Region South Second-Team. The Cedar Park native was also among three Bobcats who were recognized for their academic performances. In the spring, Hormuth will be graduating with a major in teaching with an emphasis in math and science.

Female Athlete of the Year Nominees: 

San Marcos senior middle blocker Taylor Henderson

Henderson will be moving on beyond San Marcos in spring, but her 473-kill season will remain as a mark for Lady Rattlers to strive for. Head coach Michelle Moreno and San Marcos concluded the year 25-16 overall, 8-3 in district with Henderson as the lead producer.

Following the season, Henderson was named First-Team All-District. She also recorded 429 digs, 67 aces and 42 blocks. Henderson has yet to decide where she will be continuing her volleyball career.

Texas State senior pitcher Randi Rupp 

It’s no secret that Randi Rupp is one of the most dynamic pitchers in the Sun Belt. She received the Pitcher of the Year accolade and decidedly so. She concluded the season with a 0.95 earned run average, 297 strikeouts and 226.1 innings pitched. She also led the conference in batters struck out looking (83), innings pitched, win (25) and games started (34).

For the first time in her career, Rupp was named a Second Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The Mont Belvieu native will return for one more season as the Bobcats look to make a return to the NCAA tournament.

San Marcos senior forward Miranda Urbizu

Miranda Urbizu put together a strong junior campaign during the Lady Rattlers' 2017 season. 

Urbizu scored 40 goals for San Marcos. She also added 24 assists. 

Urbizu was named District 14-6A's Most Valuable Player. 

Urbizu enters her senior season only needing 29 goals to break the San Marcos High School record for career goals, which is currently set at 130. 

She is currently committed to play soccer at the University of Houston. 

San Marcos senior shortstop Olivia Lantigua

Olivia Lantigua had a strong senior season with the Lady Rattlers in 2017. 

She had a .522 batting average, a .602 on base percentage and an .822 slugging percentage. She amassed 47 hits, including 17 for extra bases and one home run. Lantigua had 35 RBIs and only struck out twice during the 2017 season.

Lantigua was named to the All-District 14-6A First Team.

She currently plays for McLennan Community College.
