Donna Dean Burke

Donna Dean Burke, age 87, of San Marcos, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, into the loving arms of the Lord. She was born April 5, 1930, in Battle Creek, Iowa, to Walter and Irene Angeline (Sellman) Meade.

Donna was deeply devoted to her family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph O. Burke (2006), her mother, and her stepfather, Vernon O. Fowler.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Connie Jean Burke of San Marcos.

Donna married her late husband, on June 23, 1947, in Atlantic, Iowa. They lived in Ames, Iowa while Joe finished his college degree In the 1950s, they moved to Dayton, Ohio where she sang professionally as a part of “The Three Honeys.” When Joe retired they moved to San Marcos.

She was a member of First Christian Church for over 35 years where she served as an Elder and made most of the Chrismons for the church Chrismon tree. She was also a member of Quail Creek Country Club where she enjoyed playing bridge and attempted to play golf. Her only serious sport was bowling which she did until just a few years before her death in spite of her advancing dementia.

Donna loved Christmas, playing games, collecting angels and nativity scenes; and she wore butterflies to symbolize the Resurrection.

On Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at 10 a.m., Donna’s life will be celebrated at Pennington Memorial Chapel, with the Reverends Gregory Ross and Cari Fowler officiating. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m., at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
