Texas State held on Sunday to defeat Coastal Carolina, 53-48, and even its Sun Belt record to 1-1.

The Bobcats started the contest against the Chanticleers on fire from the field. Texas State shot 65 percent in the opening half, but the Bobcats went cold in the second half shooting 27.3 percent. Despite the shooting struggles, Texas State escaped the HTC Center with their first conference victory of the season.

“This was a great win for us after coming off the disappointing loss to Appalachian State,” head coach Danny Kaspar said in a statement. “Our guys have played for about 74 of the 80 minutes on this road trip. This is a very tough road trip in terms of travel and I am really thankful for the guys’ efforts in both games this weekend.”

Texas State’s furious start began early with the Bobcats jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Sophomore guard Nijal Pearson ignited the Bobcat offense with a mid-range jumper followed by two 3-pointers from senior guard Tyler Blount, and a 3-pointer from sophomore forward Nedja Privojic.

Texas State continued to control the pace of Sunday’s game, and saw its largest lead of the game come at 30-16 when junior forward Alex Peacock and Pearson sank back-to-back shots from beyond the arc.

Coastal Carolina, however, finished the first half on a 8-2 run to slice the Bobcat advantage down to 32-24 at the intermission.

Texas State pushed its lead out 38-28 to begin the second half, but the Bobcat offense shut down for nearly 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the Chanticleers used Texas State’s struggles to cut the deficit down to 41-39.

The Bobcats saw their lead evaporated when Coastal Carolina sank four consecutive free throws to even the game at 43-43. Both teams battled back and forth but Texas State grabbed control when Pearson converted two free throws and Prijovic sank a jumper. The Bobcats were able to avoid a meltdown by securing the 53-48 win.

Pearson led the Bobcats with 14 points followed by from Blount. Peacock added nine points and Prijovic tallied seven points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Marlin Davis had a career-high seven rebounds.

Texas State takes on South Alabama in its Sun Belt home opener on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside Strahan Coliseum.
