Suspect shoots self in leg while stealing vehicle

One Still Sought

It might seem easy to steal a vehicle that’s been left unlocked with the keys inside — but life’s lessons will prove just about anything can go awry.

That’s what happened early Wednesday morning, San Marcos Police say.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired at 3:28 am. At the corner of Hutchison and Moon streets, arriving to find two juveniles, one of whom had reportedly shot himself in the left leg with a sawed-off shotgun.

Police later determined that those two teens, along with a third that has not been located, had been stealing a 2011 Subaru Outback that was later reported stolen from the Local Downtown student housing apartment complex.

The injured suspect was taken to a hospital and police questioned the second.

The vehicle, described as silver with a block roof rack and the Texas license plate FLH9140 is still missing, as is the shotgun. It’s unknown if the juveniles brought the weapon with them, or if it was in the unsecured vehicle.

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the vehicle. Anyone who sees it is urged to call 911.

Police are also using the occasion to remind residents to not leave vehicles unlocked nor with the keys in plain view.
