The Bobcats got off to a rough start to begin the season as they didn’t win a set in Waco at the Baylor Invitational over the weekend.

Texas State matched up with Marquette to begin its season. The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the first set, with neither team leading by more than two points at any time. A kill from junior setter Cheyenne Huskey brought the Bobcats within a point of tying the game, down 24-23. However, Marquette junior outside hitter Madeline Mosher picked up a kill on the next play to take the set.

The Golden Eagles won the next two games, 25-17 each, as Texas State went on to face No. 16 Baylor.

After dropping the first set 25-21, the Bobcats found themselves in another tight set in the second. Trailing 24-23 again, freshman setter Emily DeWalt found freshman outside hitter Janelle Fitzgerald for a score to tie the game back up.

Sophomore setter Brooke Johnson’s next serve flew into the net, and the Bears earned the game-winning point off a kill from sophomore outside hitter Yosianna Pressley. Baylor went on to win the third and final set, 25-17.

Texas State’s last chance to win a game came against LSU. The Bobcats had lost the first set, 25-20, and were down again in the second, 24-21. Sophomore middle blocker Tyeranee Scott earned the ball back for Texas State with a kill, and LSU sophomore outside hitter Taylor Bannister brought the Bobcats within one after consecutive attacking errors.

Bannister wouldn’t be denied again, though, and earned the set-winning point on her next hit. The Bears won the match after beating Texas State 25-18 in the third game.

With the three sweeps, the Bobcats are now 0–3. They’ll hope to pick up their first win on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against UTSA as they host the Creeds and Crests Classic at Strahan Arena.
