Task force seeks workforce housing input from public

Wednesday, September 12, 2018

Housing affordability has become a top priority for the city government and city staff. And on Thursday, the city’s Workforce Housing Task Force will meet for two hours to discuss ways to bring San Marcos more affordable housing.

City Manager Bert Lumbreras has defined workforce housing as not subsidized housing, but homes that would be affordable for people who work in San Marcos and do not make more than about $120,000 for a family of four. Workforce housing is the first issue that was brought before the Community Partnership Committee, a council initiative that brings together representatives from the city, county and SMCISD to discuss issues that affect those entities and the people they serve.

The San Marcos City Council has also taken steps to make resources available for a workforce housing initiative. The initiative intends to offer housing solutions for residents making up to 140 percent of the area median income (AMI) within the Austin/Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city’s statistics show that 84.4 percent of the population of San Marcos has an income below the AMI ($86,000 for a four-person household).

The Workforce Housing Task Force meeting will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the San Marcos Activity Center (501 E. Hopkins St.) in Room 3. The meeting is open to the public.

“We welcome public participation and feedback in this process,” city spokesman Trey Hatt said.
