Alfred John Haberer, Jr.
Alfred John Haberer, Jr. passed from this life into his eternal rest on December 17, 2020, after an extended illness. He was a resident of Brookdale North in San Marcos, Texas.
Alfred had been in the care of Heart to Heart Hospice and in the care of his devoted caregiver, Gwen Harrington, for the past several years. He came to regard her as his daughter and her devotion to him was indeed that of a daughter.
Alfred John Haberer, Jr. was born at his grandparent’s family farm in Uhland, Texas on October 19, 1925. He was the youngest of three sons born to Alfred J. Haberer, Sr. and Lydia Schletze Haberer. He attended school in Uhland, Texas and joined the U.S. Army during WWII, taking his basic training at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He worked for the IRS during the tax season in Austin, Texas. He was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Uhland. Pas tor Dave Goeke will have the honor of conducting Alfred’s service in his home church in Uhland.
Alfred was proud of his German farming heritage. He and his brother Gilbert bought and managed the farm between Uhland and Kyle that his grandparents, Johann and Louise Marie Tietz Haberer, began in 1893. When the elder grandparents were no longer able to manage the farm and their sons were not in agreement, it was decided the farm was to be sold. Alfred and Gilbert began to gather funds to purchase the farm. In 1993, the brothers were awarded the Texas Land Heritage Farm Recognition presented by then Governor, Rick Perry for farms in continuous ownership and management by members of the founding family. In 2006, when both brothers realized that they were getting older and would be unable to continue operation as such, they made the heart-wrenching decision to sell the farm to developers which were closing in. Since that time, they’ve been residing in senior living residences in San Marcos. Brother Gilbert Haberer passed on June 12, 2013.
Alfred J. Haberer, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George and Gilbert Haberer, a nephew George Haberer, Jr., and his niece Mary Ann Haberer Arnold. He is survived by a great niece and nephew; several cousins, including Steve Kensing, a special caregiver, Lu cinda Usher and by Gwen, his long-time caregiver who deeply mourns his loss. Visitation will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Uhland on Wednesday, December 23rd, 9:30-10:30AM. Services will follow at 10:30AM, with interment in the Live Oak Cemetery where his parents, grandparents, and brothers rest in peace.
