Alton G. (Al) Brieger of San Marcos, TX, beloved and cherished husband, father and grandfather passed away on Tuesday afternoon March 12, 2019 at the age of 91. He was born in Corpus Christi, TX on Sept. 13, 1927 to Robert and Wilhelmina Brieger.

Alton grew up in Orange Grove, TX (near Corpus Christi) and earned his degree in history at Texas A&I, now Texas A&M-Kingsville. Al, who was fluent in German, spent a year at the University of Heidelberg before coming back to the U.S. to earn his master’s in history and government at A&I.

Al was a key part of Texas State for 21 years. He came to Southwest Texas State in 1964 as registrar and dean of admissions. Several years after that, he was dean of student and academic services, and taught full-time in the history department his last five years before retiring in August 1985. He was also an integral part of RFSA (Retired Faculty and Staff Association) since its inception.

He and his beloved wife of 60+ years, Ann, loved to travel and were able to visit many destinations in Europe. They also toured all 50 states – the lower 48 and the lower provinces of Canada by motorhome.

Al was a Rotarian for over 60 years. He became a Paul Harris Fellow and served as district governor from 1976-1977. Early in his years in San Marcos, he was part of a group commissioned by the mayor to write a charter for the city. While at Southwest Texas he was active with ACT serving as the state representative for Texas. He and Ann were long time members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

Al is preceded in death by his wife Ann Brieger, his parents and brother. Al is survived by his son, Jon Brieger and wife, Jan of Blanco, Texas their daughter, Tasha Corradini and husband, R.G. Corradini; his daughter Karen Tarascio of California, and her children: Samantha Conway and husband, Kevin Conway, Allison Tarascio and Chase Tarascio.

Family will receive friends at Pennington Funeral Home 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019.

Al’s life will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Marcos on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 3 p.m. with Fr. Ben Nelson officiating. Private Burial at the San Marcos City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in Al’s memory be made to The Alton G. Brieger Scholarship Fund, History Dept., 501 University Drive, San Marcos, Texas 78666, or St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 3039 Ranch Rd 12, San Marcos, TX 78666.
