Ima Mae Hafernik, 83, of San Antonio, passed away at home in the presence of family on Oct. 23, 2018 due to complications related to cancer.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1935, to Claude Burian and Cora Belle Alexander at their home near Jacob’s Well outside Wimberley, Texas.

Ima attended San Marcos High School, then Southwest Texas State Teachers College. She married Robert Hafernik on Aug. 26, 1956 and they had three children: Robert Jr., Dana “Sue,” and David.

She worked at many jobs over her lifetime, but spent the longest time working for the Northeast Independent School District as a substitute teacher and school principal’s secretary. She retired from the school district in May 1993.

She had an amazing green thumb and her garden was certified by both The National Wildlife Federation and the Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Backyard Habitat program as a wildlife habitat. She was also an avid birder, square dancer and hostess. She was very active in her Ministry “Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion” at Blessed Sacrament Catholic church. She and her husband Bob were coordinators of this Ministry for over 20 years.

Ima is survived by her husband Robert Hafernik; her children Robert Hafernik Jr., and his wife Patricia, Dana “Sue” Smith and her husband Doug, and David Hafernik; and grandchildren Stephen Smith, Ashley Smith and Jordan Hafernik. She was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Cora Alexander.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, where Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Blessed Sacament Catholic Church, 600 Oblate Drive.

Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio.

Pallbearers will be Robert Hafernik Jr., Doug Smith, David Hafernik, Les Hughes, Ernesto Vara, David Rodriguez, and John Martone.
