James Cumming Watkins II

James Cumming Watkins II, passed away on Monday Oct. 16, 2017 at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House at the age of 94. Born on June 20, 1923 in Brooklyn, he grew up in Port Washington, NY. He attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management. Jim served in the Army during World War II, and was stationed in Harlingen, TX, where he was injured in a training accident.

Jim married Rosalind Reynolds in 1953 and lived in Rosalyn, NY until he was hired by General Dynamics/Convair in San Diego, and moved the family to El Cajon, CA. In 1964 he happily accepted a transfer back east to work at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, in Groton, CT, and settling in Niantic, CT. After his retirement in 1985 he and Roz lived several places: Dataw Island, SC; Montrose and Ridgway, CO; Waynesboro, VA; and Wimberley, TX. Their eldest daughter Lindy moved to live with Roz and Jim in their later years, and the family is extremely grateful for her loving and selfless devotion to them.

Jim is preceded in death by Roz, his wife of 60 years, and is survived by two siblings, Mary Helen Baker of Sagamore Beach, MA and Allan Watkins of Tampa, FL; his children Rosalind Watkins, Cornelia Watkins Dyer and husband Max of Houston, James C. Watkins III and wife Joan of Lovettsville, VA, and Andrea Watkins Palacio and husband Severo, also of Houston, as well as 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His remains will be cremated and interned next to his wife in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The family would like to thank the wonderful people at Hospice Austin for their kind and dedicated care of Jim.
