Joseph Lee Searcy, 90, a long-time San Marcos resident, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 at the Tennova Nursing Home in Newport, Tennessee.

Joe Searcy was born Feb. 5, 1927 to Thomas and Louise Katherine Searcy in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He spent his early years in Kansas and Missouri, calling California, Missouri his home. After finishing high school he joined the Army Air Corp near the end of WWII and trained as a pilot. This spurred his love for flying throughout his life. Joe enjoyed working on his single engine Cessna as well as his collection of Cadillacs.

After his stint in the Army Air Corp, Joe attended Sam Houston University in Huntsville. He received a degree in education and began his career as a middle school math teacher in Houston, Texas. Through the years Joe held many positions of leadership and ended his professional career as the school superintendent in Dripping Springs, Texas.

Joe married Harriet, or “Hattie,” while attending college, and they spent over 40 years in and around

Texas while they both held teaching and leadership positions. They retired to San Marcos, Texas. Hattie passed away in 1992. Joe later married Ruth Evers in 1994 and subsequently moved to Newport, Tennessee.

Joe was a devoted Christian, Shriner, Mason, husband, friend and teacher. He will be fondly remembered for his love and concern for children, whether arranging transportation to Shriner Hospitals, being “Barney” the clown in Shriner parades, or making his famous balloon animals. He will be missed by the many people he’s helped during his lifetime.

Per Joe’s wishes, there will not be a memorial service. For more information, call Thomason Funeral Home at 512-396-2300.
