Ora Vernice Boyd

Ora Vernice Boyd, a kind, gentle, loving spirit, passed away into the hands of our Heavenly Father on Aug. 5, 2017, at the age of 79. Vernice was born to George Sr. and Gertrude Byas on Aug. 14, 1937, in San Marcos, Texas. She was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Vernice attended grade school at Dunbar Colored School going on to graduate from San Marcos High School in 1956. Upon high school graduation she attended Southwest Texas State University and Trinity University. She professed her love for Christ at an early age, where she remained a devoted lifelong member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in San Marcos, Texas. She believed that she could do all things through Christ who strengthened her. Vernice served in many capacities at the church, such as President of the Missionary Society, member of the Steward Board and chairperson of many programs throughout the years. Vernice was employed at Gary Job Corps for 20 years as a Residential Advisor, where her smile and kindness touched the lives of many students throughout her years there until her retirement. After retiring, Vernice worked as a health care provider. Vernice loved gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and caring for her grandchildren. Vernice will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her parents George Sr. and Gertrude Byas, brothers Alvin Byas Sr., Willie Lee Byas and James Edward Byas. She leaves to cherish her memories, her son Eric Byas of San Marcos; daughter Stephanie Baez of San Marcos; sisters Mary Manjang of Killeen, Emma Johnson of San Marcos, Rev. Gertrude Durham (Carl) of Austin, brothers George Byas Jr. of Bryan, Roger Byas (Myrtle) of San Marcos; grandchildren Joseph Armstrong, Mariza Baez, Mhykeah Baez, Xavier Baez, Jasmine Byas and Jordan Byas; great-granddaughter Marley Davis and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church, San Marcos. Interment will follow at San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery, San Marcos.
