Velia ‘Betty’ Nevarez Rodriguez

Velia ‘Betty’ Nevarez Rodriguez

Sunday, December 23, 2018

On Dec. 20, 2018, Velia “Betty” Nevarez Rodriguez went to be with the Lord at the age of 87. She was a life long resident of San Marcos. While raising her children, she made time to get involved in community politics by registering people to vote and on election days, she would walk neighborhoods and knock on doors reminding people to go exercise their right as citizens. She was a dedicated member of the Democratic Party and the wife of Hays County Commissioner, Peter Rodriguez, Jr. who preceded her in death.

Betty was very active in the American G.I. Forum Women organization and at various times served as an officer of the local and national chapters. In 1968, Betty and her husband opened City Appliance as an owner/office manager. She was a mother to her children and grandchildren and her home was opened to others who needed her care. She had a passion for dancing. Few were the weekends that she and Peter wouldn’t go dancing. She enjoyed mariachi music and if she didn’t have a partner, she danced alone with such delight and enthusiasm whereever a mariachi group was performing. She always greeted her friends with a smile and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be missed by all those who love her. Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband, Peter Rodriguez, Jr. and her son David C. Rodriguez. She is survived by three sons, Leonard Rodriguez and his wife Diane, John Paul Rodriguez and his wife Laura, Billy Rodriguez and her daughter Patricia Rodriguez Socias. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018, from 2 to 8: p.m. at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos, Texas, where a Prayer Service will be held that evening at 7 p.m. The Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, at the Thomason Funeral Home chapel.
