Walter Winfield Holmes

Walter Winfield Holmes, known by many as “Hood” and/or “Wally,” passed away on Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 in New Mexico.

Walter was born on Nov. 12, 1953 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Mary Jo and Winfield Holmes. He was raised in the Wesley Chapel AME Church community in San Marcos, Texas and graduated from San Marcos High school in 1971 where he excelled in football as a tackle. He was awarded an athletic scholarship to New Mexico Highlands University in Santa Fe. There, he met his wife Lillian. They were married for 42 years and blessed with two children.

Walter and Lil assumed residency in Chimayo, New Mexico and raised their children. He was employed in the field of corrections. Walter had a love and passion for cooking, and was renowned for his Texas-style barbeque. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents and grandparent, Milton and Lucille Cheatham, several great-aunts and a greatuncle. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Holmes; children: Tamika (Jon) and Joaquin; grandchildren: Kierra, Devonn, Matthew, Malachi, Noah, and Jaylynn; brother, Royce Holmes (Tina); sister, Vicki Holmes-Sauls (Charles); aunt, Lillie Belle Townsend; cousins: Mike Townsend (Edna), Tenesa Townsend and Patrice Townsend; several nieces and nephews; and a host of in-laws.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at Wesley Chapel AME Church, 224 S. Fredericksburg Street, on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at 11 a.m.
