Kudos to Lions Club for support of School Fuel

Letter to the Editor
Sunday, July 8, 2018

Dear Editor,

After seeing the two letters to the Editor about the San Marcos Lions Club in Sunday’s, April 29, 2018 newspaper, I decided to also give my comments. School Fuel San Marcos has a huge community project — addressing the food-insecure children in San Marcos public schools. Our program started in 2012 with a Bible study in a local church— the subject was poverty. The group decided to look into what does poverty really look like in San Marcos. They researched many venues to come up with a plan; the adults of these children, for the most part, have resources from which they can receive help. Sadly, this does not always trickle down to the children. I’ve had many adults tell me they wish they had a program like ours when they were in school; they were always hungry. We currently feed 671 children each week, by sending home a weekend supply of easy open, not perishable, and non-microwavable and with no refrigeration required items. Many of the San Marcos and Texas State citizens have invested their time and resources into School Fuel.

We would like to thank the San Marcos Lions Club, who has also packed bags with us many times this year, and contributed enough financial aid to supply over 700 weekend sacks of food. The Lion’s motto is “we serve” and they have exceeded that need. The children receiving those sacks are very appreciative of their donation.

School Fuel celebrates their 5th anniversary with a banquet and silent auction. Please visit our web page (www.schoolfuelsanmarcos.org) to read the rest of our story and to learn how to support our upcoming banquet by purchasing tickets, sponsoring a table, or donating a silent auction item.

Sincerely,

Nancy Smith
