Dear editor,

TRUNK OR TREAT is a horrible idea! When I first heard of it, my first thought was how dangerous this can be. Any child could easily be abducted by being enticed into the trunk of a vehicle with the promise of candy ... Or a dad could be working on the car with the trunk open, and a child could crawl in searching for candy and an unsuspecting dad could close the trunk lid. There are great number of bad things that can go wrong with this idea. Parents and others — please do not do this. Use your good sense and imagination to come up with good, safe ways for the children to get their treats. The best idea I ever saw was at Offutt AFB in Bellevue, Neb. where a dad made a coffin out of plywood (cardboard could be used), painted it black, placed a plastic skeleton in it, and filled it with candy for the children. Others who lived on the base came up with huge witch's cauldrons with the appropriate accents and filled it with candy, a HUGE pumpkin, etc. Children are very precious and it is up to all of us to take good care of them. Put your brain power and imagination to work and do it! Forget about Trunk or Treat. It is an easy and quick way for parents ... but NOT a good and safe way for the children.

Sincerely,

Ann Blackburn
