Properly handling human remains

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I am so proud of the way our city and university is working with the Indigenous Cultures Institute to return the ancient human remains that were being held at the University to the earth in a respectful and appropriate way.  This will give peace to those spirits who were disturbed from their spiritual journeys when the bones were removed from their original resting places.

Now we need to encourage the University of Texas in Austin and the City of Austin to do the same.  They have over 2,000 spirits wandering aimlessly in agony because their bones are being held at UT.  Most of the human remains are just being held in storage.

It is always hard to admit that we’ve done something wrong.  Yet, it is so important to “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.”- Maya Angelou.

Thank you,

Vicki Hartin
