Questions about the NRA still abound

Letter to the Editor
Sunday, July 15, 2018

Editor,

Mr. Stallones’  letter on the opinion page last Sunday was informative about some of the positive aspects and actions of the NRA. However, he failed to answer some very critical questions.

How much is the NRA behind false rumors and “alternate facts” promulgated in order to stimulate fear and therefore the purchase of more guns. Examples: “Obama is going to take away all of our guns.” Or his misinformation that the “tremendous influx of illegals has become a tremendous safety concern” and therefore we should carry more guns. When actually there is less crime along Mexican and Central American immigrants than among the general population according to the FBI.

When some of the public are panicked into purchasing more ammunition and guns, does NRA financially profit? NRA leaders blame mental health issues rather than the abundance of guns. Is that just a stance to deflect blame or has the NRA actively supported and encouraged support of Obamacare and other public and private programs that address the issues of mental health?

Final question — how many deaths is one entitled to in order to enjoy the thrill of rapidly firing bullets from an assault weapon with a huge (but absolutely unnecessary) ammunition clip?
